Rethinking Thin
I agree with xiao K's hypothesis that thinness, or the standard of beauty in general, is associated with youth -- ie, lots and lots of fertility. However, the extent of thinness driving today's ideals exceeds reproductive necessity. (Exceedingly low body fat could cause infertility.) The Paris Hilton, Kate Moss level of thinness is certainly not going to help with having children.
Like the cause and risk factors for obesity, the social motivation of endless pursuit for ever thinner body image can be of many facets. It's not an either-or, unifying-theory, one-single-bullet thing.
However, since one cannot become younger no matter what you do (with the exception of continual and extensive plastic surgery), one can at least try to become richer, which has some correlation with thinness.

Maybe. After you read the book you might actually get the feeling that getting rich (at least richer than how you are now) is probably easier than losing weight.
There's another argument -- Becoming richer (than you are now) can conceivably also help you lose weight and potentially improve your feeling of well-being, but losing weight and keeping it off will not make you richer (could hurt your wallet too) and is more likely to make you more obsessive and neurotic.

Yeah, once I was dreaming of taking a job at the construction site or stacking shelves at the local supermarket. Spartans!
BTW, I watched the recently released DVD of 300. Of course, as a person obssessed with eating (well), I noticed there's no mention of food supply to the warriors, except a scene of the Spartan king nibbling an apple. I scratched my head and then conculded this was not a realistic movie.

The correlation between higher socioeconomics and weight, in the developed country, is obviously stronger than the correlation between weight and actively dieting. Actually, I'd say actively dieting is negatively correlated with body weight. The more people diet, the fatter they seem to become. The people who lose weight successfully through dieting seem to have more mental preoccupation (obsessed?) with food and numbers.
Of course, I am not trying to stop anyone from recording every bite they eat every day, day after day, and weighing themselves morning, noon, night every day. (These are the reported characteristics of people in the National Weight-Loss Registry or something like that who have lost a lot of weight and kept it off for at least 5 years.)
Didn't the series Rome explain what they ate back then? I remember seeing the fruits, olives, bread, and a sticky porridge type of goo. Where did they get all the protein to build muscle?
(I have to wonder if all the six-packs in the movie were CGI.)

你不会真的想那样吧,真的上了工地,在你LOSE一磅肉之前已经晒得像黑炭头了。花差花差小将军 wrote:Yeah, once I was dreaming of taking a job at the construction site or stacking shelves at the local supermarket. Spartans!.

If one visits a bathing house, one can observe that men and women grow fat in different ways. A fat woman exaggerates her femininity; her breasts abd buttocks enlarge till she comes to look like the Venus of Willendorf. A fat man, on the other hand, looks like a cross between a very young child and a pregnant mother. There have been cultures in which obesity in women was considered the ideal of sexual attraction, but in no culture, so far as I know, has a fat man been considered more attractive than a thin one. If my own weight and experience give me any authority, I would say that fatness in the male is the physical expression of a psychological wish to withdrawn from sexual competition and, by combining mother and child in his own person, to become emotionally self-sufficent. The Greeks thought of Narcissus as a slender youth but I think they were wrong. I see him as a middle-aged man with a corporation, for, however ashamed he may be of displaying it in public, in private a man with a belly loves it dearly; it may be an unprepossessing child to look at, but he has borne it all by himself.
Violent delights.
